10 Things I’ve Learned Since Becoming a Children’s Director – Number 5

I’m in over my head!

The first time I heard this and realized this the thought was overwhelming.  What have I done?  I don’t want to mess this up?  What am I going to do?  HELP!

When I finally got to HELP! a peace came over me.  That was the answer to all my questions.  My help comes from the Lord!  Realizing I’m in over my head shouldn’t be an overwhelming situation, it should be an exciting place to live.

If I’m not in over my head, then I am living in my own strength.  I am walking out my own path, living my own dream, accepting my own abilities as the limits of what my life can be.  When I begin to live life “in over my head” I begin to understand this isn’t about me, it’s about Him.  This is about me fulfilling the very purposes and plans He created me for.  If “I’m not in over my head” then I don’t need Him, and if I don’t need Him, then I have a problem.

Being in this place isn’t always easy, on the contrary, it is often scary and uncomfortable, but it now the only place I want to live.

10 Things I’ve Learned Since Becoming a Children’s Director – Number 7

Hobbies are Essential!

Pastor Bryan and Jennifer both told me when I started “You need a hobby!”  I didn’t get it right away, but it was certainly one of the first lessons I learned.  As a teacher, I worked long hours.  I brought stuff home all the time.  I dreamed about kids, about teachers, about parents, about kids, about kids, about…kids all the time.  It was consuming, but church was my escape.  It was my hobby.  I sang on the worship team and when I was there, I was ALL there.  My mind was not on school, it was on worship!  Ministry was my passion and so when I was there, I was able to leave work (at least most of the time)!

When my work became my passion I began to realize there was no where I had that allowed me to turn it off.  I lived it, breathed it, slept it, dreamed it, talked about it and loved it.  But I had nothing that took my mind off of it.  It was my passion so turning it off seemed impossible but I quickly realized the absolute necessity of figuring out a way to turn it off.  Without an escape, a way to turn it off, burn out would be inevitable.

I still haven’t found that perfect hobby but I have certainly found a few things that work for now.  I am looking for the perfect hobby, but for all you Dream Weavers out there knitting is not it!

10 Things I’ve learned as Children’s Director – Number 10

THE CALL!

Shortly after starting my dream job as children’s director I had the amazing opportunity to attend ONE a conversation with senior, youth and children’s leaders at NewSpring Church.  During one of the sessions Perry Noble was speaking  I heard him say something to the affect of  ”you always have to go back to when you were called”.

I truly had no idea what he meant at the time. In my mind there was nothing that could ever make me doubt the call.  It made no sense to me.  I was two months into it and even though I had already experienced some hard times, I was still living a dream!

It wasn’t until one day when I was home with a sick child, feeling the weight of the world, crying out to God “I don’t know how to do this!  Are you sure I did the right thing?  Are you sure I’m the one to do this?”  that I understood.  In that moment, as if he were standing in the room with me,  I heard Perry Noble’s saying “You have to go back to where you were called!”

As tears streamed down my face, I ran upstairs, pulled out the journal I had written in the night God began to speak to me about this call.  I read it over, and over,  and over again.  It didn’t make the struggle I was facing go away.  It didn’t even completely change my perspective.  I still didn’t have any idea how to do this task He had set before me, but it did reassure me to know this wasn’t my plan, it was God’s.

See, the reality is, if I had taken this job just because I thought it was the right thing to do, that wouldn’t have been enough.  When the rubber met the road there had to be more holding it on course than  “I thought it was a good idea”!  I make mistakes.  I make them a lot, actually!  If all that had been holding this together was what I thought, in that moment, my thought would have been “I made a terrible mistake!”  What kept me going, what will continue to keep my going, what determines what I do – should always be The Call of God!  Today I understand and I’m grateful that I have that place – the place I know God called me!

Growing Pains!

rockstarsToday at Kid’s ROCK we had an exciting problem.

We had to close a class before check-in ended because the class filled up!

Growing Pains…it’s a great problem to have…but a problem none the less.  Gonna be looking at options, recruiting volunteers and all that fun stuff this week along with preparing for an amazing trip to UNLEASH.  I think it might be a busy week!

If you are interested in serving in one of the most exciting ministries at ROCK Church, let me know.

What Have You Been Reading?

I have mentioned before that reading was not something I grew up loving to do.  My fourth grade teacher made me read in front of the whole class and after the entire class laughing at me…I decided I HATED reading!

Over the last few years I have grown to love reading though I am still not very fast with it.  It takes work for me to read and retain anything I have read.  The past two weeks I have felt like a sponge though.  Check out what I have been reading.

This was an amazing book that gave practical information about how to help the people that serve in your area of ministry be successful.  It was focused on Children’s Ministry but could be used in any area of ministry.

book1

I loved this book.  I love thinking about what makes people tick.  If you have ever struggled with feeling like you were spinning your wheels trying to imitate some great leader only to find yourself farther away than when you started, this is the book for you.

book2

I just started this book last night.  I read one chapter and thought “Man this is hard to hear!”  If you work with kids of any age, you need to read this book!book3

So I want to hear what you have been reading?

So Blessed!

I get to serve with some of the most amazing people on the planet.  Kid’s ROCK volunteers serve every Sunday and overcome many obstacles while doing so.  As I reflected today on how blessed Kid’s ROCK & ROCK Church is, here are some of the things I remembered…

  • Our Wee ROCK class (2 & 3 year olds) have been short a teacher for different reasons for the past 4 weeks.  Yet every week when I talk to them after service they tell me how God blessed them and the class and they had an amazing time with the kids.
  • The teachers in our Double Take class have faithfully taken the double service kids into “Big Church” for worship every Sunday for a while now and taught them about worship.  Last week I looked around and saw many of those kids very engaged in worship along side of their leaders.
  • Our middle school and high school volunteers have really stepped up their game too.  The high school volunteers have started helping lead small groups in Club ROCK. Our middle school volunteers are faithfully helping in the nursery and younger classes.  They are doing an amazing  job.  A parent told me that their middle school son who works in the nursery told her on the way home from church last Sunday “I just love my babies!”  Wow!  It is awesome to see a generation of leaders who are being raised up to love to serve!
  • Today, even with the weather issues, we had a large number of kids.  With several teachers out because of road conditions and plenty of children to serve, everyone who was there stepped up their game…and these volunteers didn’t skip a beat!  I even had one teacher say “My husband tried everything he could to talk me out of coming, but I wasn’t gonna miss this!”
  • A volunteer told me this week.  “I love where I’m serving, but if you need me somewhere else, or someone else can do this better, then move me where you need me!”  Man, that will rock your world when someone trust you enough to tell you that!
  • A parent got up and brought a child to first service so she could serve even though it meant the mom had to go back home and finish getting ready to come with the rest of the family for 2nd service.
  • We were short staffed in the nursery in 2nd service and they had a LOT of kids.  When I walked in to check on them, the response I got was….”We are fine.  Some of them are a little fussy, but we are making it work!”

In case you can’t tell.  I love the people I get to serve along side.  If you attend ROCK Church, you need to thank these volunteers the next time you see one of them walking around in their bright green shirts, even if you don’t have kids. You may not have kids, but someone sitting near you probably does and  these volunteers serve the kids of ROCK Church every Sunday so ALL of you can enjoy your service at ROCK Church!

Confessions of a Children’s Director

I am not perfect.  I am human.  I get frustrated, make mistakes, say things without thinking, think about saying things I’m smart enough not to let come out of my mouth.  I can get in moods where I even get on my own nerves.  So there you have it….yes, I am in desperate need of a Savior…glad I have one!  Thank you Jesus!

In my frustrated, grumpy mood, I decided I would look up some curriculum stuff and upon googling, I came across this blog that was written over a year old but spoke volumes to where I was at the moment.  Sometimes you can have incredible leaders, like my amazing senior pastor speak things to you that you just don’t get but when someone else says it in just the right way you get it.  You have the “light bulb”  moment that is followed by “oh, that is what he has been trying to say”!

So are you curious as it what my light bulb moment was tonight?  Here is part of it….

  • Things are caught, not taught (Craig in reference to the importance of leaders who model faith to the kids)
  • Buy curriculum, you can’t buy leadership (Craig in reference to CP’s who love spending time writing their own curriculum at the expense of developing leaders)
  • Work on your Children’s Ministry, not in your Children’s Ministry! Stop subbing! You’re robbing when you do this.
  • Build depth to your volunteer teams. Develop your second string.
  • Check out the entire blog here.  I love my job.  I have never been happier in my life but the truth is I get  I’m still human! I don’t get it right all the time and tonight I was reminded that I still have a lot to learn.   I love the volunteers that serve in Kid’s ROCK, I love the kids in Kid’s ROCK, and most importantly I love the God that this is all about!

    Kid’s ROCK Volunteers ROCK!

I am so overwhelmed with emotion I can’t decide whether to cry  or jump for joy…so I’ve done both.  We went double today and what a day!  I can’t tell you how excited I was…there was just an expectancy and energy in the atmosphere that was almost uncontainable.  I felt like a kid on Christmas morning.  Not only was exciting…it went amazing!  The Kid’s ROCK volunteers stepped up to the plate and hit it out of the ballpark.  Let me give you a few snippets of what I have heard.

    • We served a total of 111 kids today not including the 3o extra kids from first service that stayed for second service.  This is about a 22% growth from our average of 89 kids on a Sunday.
    • We started 2 new classes in Kid’s ROCK and Pastor Matthew started 1 new class for ReMix kids.  These classes were designed to serve volunteer kids so they would not have to sit in the same service twice.  We had the privilege of pouring into 30 kids for not one service but two!  How incredible.
    • My daughter Courtney would not stop talking about the ReROCK class (class for volunteer kids) on the way home.  She even kept making her sister take her ear buds out to hear about what she had learned.  Rodney and Tammy Orr did an amazing job with them today!
    • I had to go make copies of materials for our ROCK Star class because we had so many children we ran out.  We had 23 kids total in that class.  We average around 14.
    • Our nursery workers blew it up today!  They started a new system which gives parents feedback on what was going on with their babies during the service!  Parents loved it!
    • Had a parent say ” I kept waiting for my number to go up on the screen but it never did!”  What incredible nursery workers!  Do you have any idea what that means to a parent who has such a desire to enter into a service and never can because they always have to go get their child.  This was their first experience at ROCK Church and they were amazed!
    • All I heard all day was how nice and friendly the Kid’s ROCK volunteers were…way to show the heart of Jesus!

I know there are so many other stories I am forgetting to tell in my exhaustion but I had to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU A MILLON TIMES OVER FOR EVERY Kid’s ROCK volunteer who took it to a whole nuther level!  I LOVE YOU!  Really I can’t say it enough…You Guys Are AMAZING!

Book Review 1 – Children’s Ministry in the 21st Century

OK – I did it.  I finished the book ahead of schedule.  Of course, it helped I had already read all but the last few chapters.  Anyway, I have to say this book pushed me to think about what we do in church, not just in children’s ministry but in church.

A lot of what I read was information our senior pastor has been encouraging us in for a while – stop doing church like it’s always been done; nothing in life is being done the way it has always been done!  This book challenges you to not only look at what is taking place in the “church world” but what is taking place in the “real world”.  If we can’t relate to people why are they going to think our God can relate to them.

It’s time to think outside the box of the 4 walls of our church and see the bigger picture of life and how it relates to children that come through our doors on Sunday morning.  This is a great read for anyone in children’s ministry whether you have been serving for 2 months or 20 years.

    When things aren’t easy…

This has been quit a week.  Here are some things I have been reminded of in the midst of all that has happened in the last 7 days.

    • Satan is real and really doesn’t like us.
    • God is real and really, really loves us.
    • I have an incredible, yet imperfect family
    • I have an incredibly perfect and gracious God
    • God’s plans for me are bigger than my current abilities
    • My God is bigger than my inabilities
    • People will fail, God NEVER does
    • Difficult situations reveal our true character
    • Difficult situations provide opportunities for God to show off.

God never promised life would be easy.  We are imperfect people bought with the blood of a perfect savior.  I have walked out of this week stronger, more determined, and focused on what this life is all about.  It has nothing to do with my failures, other’s failures, or even our successes.  It has everything to do with the reality that we live in a fallen world in need of a Savior and I know how to introduce them to Him.
